The sun shone and more than 90 members came along to our Summer District Meeting, many wearing hats as suggested by our District Chairman as our Speaker was Rivka Jacobs, a milliner from Exeter. Our Inner Wheel ethos has always been fun and friendship, so Jill ensured that the seating on the tables was mixed and it made for an enjoyable afternoon meeting new friends from across District 17.
As I wandered around snapping groups as I went, I was once again struck by how happy and friendly everyone is within District 17 – not a sad or gloomy face to be found among our members. The gallery below says it all.
District Executive for 2013/14
During our Business Meeting, Jill announced that we have a second Vice Chairman and to a round of applause she asked Gillian Altham of our Brixham Club to join us on the District Executive Table.
We now have a full District Committee for 2013-2014. They are back row from left to right: Lesley Roberts (Overseas), Maggie Ellison (Editor), Hilary Hatherleigh (Treasurer), Jill Cobley (Membership) and front row from left to right: Gill Altham (Vice Chairman), Julie Turner (District Chairman), Margaret Kempton (Member of Council), Madge Bell (Secretary).
After lunch we had a very informative talk by Rivka Jacobs, who showed such enthusiasm for her craft from start to finish. A bit shy to begin with, she blossomed and showed her passion for hats once she got into her stride and began to get questions from the audience. Hats have come and gone out of fashion over the centuries, but she is absolutely right that hats make you feel like a lady. She makes hats to order and can match any outfit. She is also considering making hats to hire. If you want to make an appointment to see her you can call on 07739 469263 or email email@example.com. She shares a studio in Cathedral Close with a dress maker.
At the conclusion of our AGM, Jill Cobley passed the chain of office to Julie Turner of our Bideford Club, who is our new District Chairman for 2013-14. She was presented with a lovely floral display from Jan Wicks, President of our Bideford Club and Julie’s childhood friend.
