On Wednesday, 17 October, Brixham Inner Wheel held their annual Interclub at the Berry Head Hotel. Nearly sixty people gathered together for a lunch preceded by entertainment by Margaret Duffy. Margaret is a highly accomplished poet, story teller and musician who regaled us with amusing stories about Devon. These were interspersed with songs written by herself and sung in a lovely clear voice. Margaret also makes the most wonderful fascinators. A truly talented lady who kept the audience amused for about an hour and was much appreciated.
After a small break we had lunch which was a delicious buffet with hot new potatoes and a choice of three amazing puddings. A great day was had by all and proceedings finished at about 4.00 pm.

So that visitors and new members can fully understand what Inner Wheel is and what we do, our Chairman has set a challenge. She gave this at District Assembly way back in July but somehow, it has only just surfaced in a pile on my desk – sorry Jill. Anyhow, better late than never so here is the challenge:
Every Club in District 17 should produce a folder of their activities to include:
- Your Club Calender of events for the year
- Photographs of the President’s installation
- Photographs of celebrations
- Photographs of Club fundraising events
- The District Magazine and Association Magazine
- Details of the District Website
The next questions is, have you all done this yet or at least started a folder? If not, now is the time to get on with it.
If any of our members are still looking for accommodation in Plymouth for the Conference next April, I am informed that Plymouth Pavilions may be able to help. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call him on 01752 522205.
It is with the greatest sadness that I have to inform you that Owen Cock, husband of PDC Janice Cock passed away on Monday, 8th October. The funeral will be held on Friday, 19 October at 1.30 pm at St Brannocks Parish Church in Braunton. Family flowers only but donations can be sent to Cancer Research UK. Many of you will know Janice very well as she has been an active member of District 17 for many years, with the past 3 years taking on the role of District Editor, and I know you will all join me in sending her our most sincere condolences at this very sad time.
Jill Cobley, District Chairman
On a bright, sunny day last week, Totnes President, Wenda Ackland, slipped and fell on a walk over Dartmoor and has broken her ankle in two places. Photos have been taken (presumably of the plaster cast and not the fall) and will be posted as soon as I receive them. Get well soon Wenda and perhaps omit the whiskey from the breakfast tea in future.
The Inner Wheel Club of Bideford are holding a “Messiah from Scratch” on Saturday, 17th November 2012 at the High Street Methodist Church in Bideford. The event takes place at 7.30 pm and the rehearsal will be at 2.30 pm.

I would hasten to add that there WILL be a few professional and semi-professional people there too, as well as members of local choirs, so please come along and support it as it will be an evening to remember.

Julie Hunt hands a cheque to Sue Wallace of North Devon Against Domestic Abuse)
At the October meeting of our Barnstaple Club, Sue Wallace was invited to give a talk on the work done by the North Devon Against Domestic Abuse organisation. This is usually a taboo subject and one that doesn’t get discussed enough. Here we have a photo of Julie Hunt, the Barnstaple Club President, handing a cheque to Sue Wallace.
Cutting the cake again after 50 years …
I’m sure we all wish Beryl and Brian Jones our very best wishes on reaching their Golden Wedding Anniversary which was held on 8th September at the Commodore Hotel in Instow. Beryl is a member of our Barnstaple Club and I’m so glad they sent in a photo so that we can all share their joy on this very special celebration.
