Exmouth keeps its mouth shut for a good cause!

The members of Exmouth Inner Wheel club kept an hours silence on International Peace Day for East Devon Victim Support on Friday 21st September. Whilst enduring the silence we knitted leg warmers for the members of Centre Stage -a young persons charity, which is soon to put on a presentation of “Cats”. The morning raised over £300 and produced a satisfying number of the leg warmers!

Amazing news from Sidmouth

The Sidmouth Club is bucking the national trend of clubs sadly closing for lack of numbers.  Over the summer, President Pat has been delighted to welcome 9 new members to our Club.  They are:
Hilary San who transferred from Otter Valley
Carolyn Watson who transferred from York Ainstey
Anne Westlake who transferred from Tiverton
Audrey Westlake who was a former Honorary Member
Marina Consterdine
Joyce Deary
Ivana Gill
Veronica Wood
Diane Wadsworth
Well done Sidmouth.  Let’s hope we can all do as well in the coming year with the help of our new Constitution rules.

Overseas – what a busy start to the year

Lesley has started the year with a bang.  At Assembly £10 was raised which is enough for one eye operation.

She has taken 149 jumpers, a large box of new school uniforms, 6 bags of linen/towerls, 4 bags of clothes and 8 beautiful patchwork/crochet blankets to the Christian Response to Eastern Europe where 3 members of the Sidmouth Club were gallantly starting to sort the new season’s contributions.

She also received 24 teddies which had been knitted by a Phyl Orgar of our Barnstaple Club and these have been given to Brixham to put into shoe boxes for CR2EE and a large bag of stamps have been given to Flo for the Leprosy Mission.

Phyl Orgar – a stitch in time definitely makes more than nine!

Well done to Lesley, our Overseas Organisers and all our amazing members who, as usual, are most generous in giving to such worthy causes.

District Meeting – 21 September 2012

The first District Meeting of the year took place at Exeter Golf Club last night and 72 of our members were able to attend.  The venue was perfect with ample parking and the meal was excellent.

Our speaker was Christine Smith who is a Street Pastor and she gave us an illuminating talk on what her role is and how it is carried out.  What a worthwhile job she does and how much safer the streets are for our youngsters whilst people like her are out and about helping wherever they can.

Everyone attending was brought up-to-date with all things District and to end the meeting, members of our Bideford Club gave us a rendition of “Chairman Jill Cobley and All” which was performed at their recent 50th Anniversary Gala Evening (see below).

Photographs of our members were taken throughout the evening and can be seen in the Gallery page.

Bideford’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Article from Jill Cobley, District Chairman:

Sheila Halliday-Pegg (Association President), Jan Wicks (Bideford President) and Jill Cobley (District Chairman) cutting the 50th Anniversary Cake

I was invited to Bideford Inner Wheel 50th Birthday Celebration. It was a wonderful evening which President Jan and her committee made into a very special evening. Our Association President, Shelia Halliday-Pegg, also attended and spoke about the achievements of Inner Wheel over the years, and Jan spoke about Bideford’s involvement in the community. It was my pleasure to present the Club with their 50th Anniversary Certificate.

A few members of the Club rounded off the evening by singing an amusing adaptation of ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and All’, I will leave you guessing as to what was sung in lieu of Tom Cobley, although you might be lucky and to hear it at some point.

Note from the Editor (who happens to belong to Bideford Club):  Bideford celebrated its 50th Anniversary (1962-2012) but actually, Bideford Club was formed in 1937 and was one of the founding Clubs for District 17.  It was disbanded in 1954 and, as yet, we have not found out why.  Do any of our District 17 members know?  We could not let the recognition of our early founders go by without celebrating them too, so we had a picture framer display our Club showing our history from 1937 – 2012.  This can be seen, together with a few other photos of our Gala Celebration, on our Club page.

Excellent Day at the Golf Competition

The Golf Day at Ashbury Golf Hotel, Okehampton was well supported; just do not ask the golfers about ‘balls in the lake’ from the first tee.  Luckily they escaped the terrible rain I had driven through, until I arrived and then they had a hail storm. Seriously though, everybody said how much fun they had playing.  District’s thanks must go to Shelia of our Okehampton Club for organising the day and she would like suggestions about where to play next year and which day of the week is most suitable.

Now to the winners … well, it was Shelia Box and the runner up was was Julie Turner of our Bideford Club.
